The International Society of Amyloidosis is pleased to announce that Professor Per Westermark will receive the 2022 Giampaolo Merlini Award. Dr. Westermark is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University in Sweden. He has dedicated his scientific career to research on amyloid and amyloidosis, and made several significant discoveries. In the 1970s, he adapted the fine-needle technique for amyloid diagnosis, and this abdominal fat biopsy technique is used throughout the world. Professor Westermark became a member of ISA's nomenclature committee in 1979, and has chaired the Committee since 1995. He has been Editor-in-Chief for ISA's official journal Amyloid: The Journal of Protein Folding Disorders since 2010, and his diligent work has resulted in the journal's current impact factor of 7.141. He also was a co-organizer of the VI International Symposium on Amyloidosis, Oslo, Norway in 1990 and the XV International Symposium on Amyloidosis, Uppsala, Sweden in 2016. Professor Westermark will give the Giampaolo Merlini Lecture on September 5, 2022 at ISA 2022 in Heidelberg.
